| Wu Bangguo Meets with Pakistani President Musharraf |

| On February 20, 2006, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) met with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in the Great Hall of the People. Wu said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Pakistan 55 years ago, although the international situation and their respective circumstances have undergone great changes, bilateral relations have always been progressing and both sides have witnessed frequent high-level exchanges, increasingly deepened mutual political trust and strengthened mutually beneficial cooperation. Both sides have maintained close cooperation in international and regional affairs and kept sound communication and collaboration in combating terrorism and safeguarding regional security. The NPC of China is a staunch supporter and promoter of bilateral friendship, would like to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the Pakistani parliament and hopes that both sides will draw lessons from and exchange experience with each other in governing a state, promoting democracy and building the legal system and jointly make new contributions to pushing for the development of bilateral strategic partnership. Musharraf said that he was very glad to visit China on the occasion when both countries were celebrating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties, and bilateral relations have withstood the test of time and developed into all-round cooperative relations with a solid foundation. Pakistan is proud of the relations between both sides and hopes to further consolidate political relations with China and expand cooperation in the areas of economy, trade and education. It also hopes that both sides will continue to support and cooperate with each other in combating terrorism, as well as in major international and regional affairs and jointly safeguard security and stability of this region. Musharraf expressed condolences over the murdering of three Chinese engineers in Pakistan recently and strongly condemned the act of a handful of terrorists to damage bilateral relations. Wu said that the Chinese people were shocked by and grieved about the murdering of Chinese engineers in Pakistan. The Chinese side has noticed that HE the President and the Pakistani government have issued strong condemnation against this terrorist event and hopes that Pakistan will further take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel in Pakistan. |
