| Huang Ju Arrives in Tunisia to Attend the Phase Meeting of World Summit on the Information Society |

| On the evening of November 14 local time, at the invitation of the Tunisian government and Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Kofi Annan, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council Huang Ju arrived in Tunisia by a special plane to attend the Tunisia Phase of the World Summit on the Information Society. Officials accompanying Huang arrived by the same plane. Representatives of the Tunisian government, senior officials of the International Telecommunication Union and the organizing committee of the World Summit on the Information Society, ambassador Sha Zukang of the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Office in Geneva and Other International Organizations in Switzerland, Chinese ambassador Liu Yu to Tunisia, staffs of the Chinese embassy in Tunisia and representatives of Chinese-funded organizations received the delegation headed by Huang at the airport. The World Summit on the Information Society is initiated by the International Telecommunication Union with the purpose of developing plans for the coordinated development of information society and realizing the UN Millennium Development Goals and promoting human progress by using information and communication technologies. The Summit is held in two phases. The first phase was held in Geneva in December 2003. The Tunisia meeting is the second phase and will focus on discussing issues of promoting development through constructing the information society. The results of the meeting will exert an in-depth impact on realizing the UN Millennium Development Goals and the sustainable economic and social progress of countries in the world. The international community attaches great importance to and puts high expectations on the Tunisia phase which leaders of more than 70 countries and about 2,000 delegates of governments, businesses and non-governmental organizations will attend. Huang Ju will deliver an important speech at the Summit to comprehensively expound the Chinese government's proposition on pushing forward the construction of information society. On November 15, Huang Ju went to the Chinese embassy in Tunisia and visited the embassy's staffs and the representatives of local Chinese-funded organizations. On the same day Huang also inspected the urban development of Tunisia. |
